GreenRoot will be a flagship green hydrogen project for the sustainable development of industry in Central Germany, to be realised in partnership by HyCC and the German gas company VNG.

Central Germany is home to a large chemical industry and a large potential market for green hydrogen.  To support decarbonization of these industries, HyCC is working with VNG AG and its wholly-owned gas trading subsidiary VNG Handel & Vertrieb GmbH to realize the GreenRoot green hydrogen plant near the town of Lutherstadt Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt.

GreenRoot will have a design capacity of 500 megawatt to produce around 50,000 tons of green hydrogen per year from renewable electricity and water.  The green hydrogen can be used by local industry, such as the chemical company SKW Piesteritz, to replace natural gas in the future and thus further reduce the use of fossil fuels. Thanks to a direct connection to the hydrogen core network, the GreenRoot project could also supply other industrial customers in the Central German chemical triangle in the future, supporting them on their path to decarbonization.

Combined expertise

HyCC builds on decades of operational experience, building on the legacy of its parent company Nobian, which already produces green hydrogen and essential chemicals at its existing electrolysis facility in the region. VNG  brings extensive expertise in the development of customised concepts for hydrogen market development.
