Final permit for pioneering green hydrogen project Djewels

Djewels 1, a planned 20 megawatt hydrogen plant in Groningen, The Netherlands, has received the final environmental and construction permit from the Provincial authorities. The project is a European front-runner in the large-scale development of green hydrogen to enable emission-free industries. 

The plant will use electrolysis to convert water and renewable electricity into up to 3,000 tons of green hydrogen per year. The hydrogen will be combined with CO2 by OCI BioMCN to produce renewable methanol, enabling them to achieve significant CO2 reductions.

The factory, which will be located at the Chemical Park in Delfzijl, will use alkaline electrolysers from the French company McPhy, equipped with electrodes from DeNora. Project developers HyCC and Gasunie are currently preparing the final investment decision, which is expected before the end of this year. The hydrogen factory is to supply the first green hydrogen in 2024.

Djewels is an important project in the scaling up and development of the technology. The project is supported by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, the regional Waddenfonds, and the European FCH-JU (via a grant from the EU Horizon 2020 research programme).
